Round 3 Feature Match: Andy Lee vs. Prabhdeep Atwal
Things are starting to heat up here at YCS Vancouver! For this round’s feature match, we have a couple of Duelists that have won their first couple of rounds. Andy Lee is visiting Vancouver from San Jose, California, piloting the Crystron K9 deck; Crystrons received a massive boost with the new K9 theme, as many Crystron monsters are Level 5, and the K9 cards help them to hit the field more easily. Meanwhile, Prabhdeep Atwal is a local Duelist from Vancouver, British Columbia, and is piloting the Vanquish Soul K9 strategy. Atwal recently made it to the Top 8 at the Burnaby Regionals and will look to carry the momentum forward to this event. It’s time to Duel!
Duel 1
Atwal won the die roll and chose to go first! His opening hand contained Vanquish Soul Jiaolong, D.D. Crow, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Vanquish Soul Dr. Mad Love, and K9-ØØ Lupis. He started by Normal Summoning Vanquish Soul Dr. Mad Love and activating its effect, but Lee responded with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, negating its effect! He then activated Mad Love’s effect, returning it to his hand, then activated the effect of Vanquish Soul Jiaolong, Special Summoning it. He then Special Summoned Lupis, and used Lupis and Jiaolong to Xyz Summon K9-17 “Ripper”! He activated Ripper’s effect, adding K9-17 Izuna to hand, and ended his turn.
Lee began his turn by Normal Summoning Scrap Recycler, sending Crystron Smiger from his Deck to the Graveyard. However, when he activated Smiger’s effect by banishing it, Atwal negated it with the effect of Ripper! Next, Lee activated “A Case for K9”, adding K9-66a Jokul to his hand, then Special Summoned Jokul and Crystron Sulfador from his hand, but when he activated Sulfador’s effect, Atwal responded with his own Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Here, Atwal activated the effects of K9-17 Izuna and K9-ØØ Lupis, Special Summoning them both, then activated Lupis’ other effect to Xyz Summon N.As.H. Knight! He activated N.As.H. Knight’s effect, attaching Lee’s Jokul to it as material. Lee then used Scrap Recycler to Link Summon Clockwork Knight, and activated Clockwork’s effect to send Sulfador to the Graveyard and try to Special Summon back Recycler, but Atwal Chained the effect of D.D. Crow, banishing Recycler from the Graveyard! Next, Lee activated Crystron Inclusion, searching for Crystron Sulfefnir. He Special Summoned Sulfefnir, discarding Crystron Cluster, then destroyed Inclusion. Next, Lee banished Inclusion and Special Summoned Crystron Sulfador, then used Sulfador and Sulfefnir to Xyz Summon K9-17 “Ripper”! He activated Izuna’s effect, searching for K9-17 Izuna and Setting K9-X Forced Release from his Deck. Lee then Special Summoned Izuna and sent K9-ØØ Lupis to the Graveyard, Special Summoned back the Lupis, then used the two to Xyz Summon N.As.H. Knight! He activated N.As.H. Knight’s effect, attaching Atwal’s N.As.H. Knight to it as material, then entered the Battle Phase. Lee’s Ripper destroyed Atwal’s Ripper, thanks to the 900 Attack Point boost from “A Case for K9”, attacked directly with Clockwork Knight and N.As.H. Knight, then ended his turn.
Atwal drew Mulcharmy Fuwalos for turn! During the Standby Phase, he activated the effect of Fuwalos, discarding it. He then Normal Summoned Vanquish Soul Dr. Mad Love, searching for Vanquish Soul, Start!, then activated Start. Here, Lee activated the effect of N.As.H. Knight, attaching Atwal’s Mad Love to it as material. Without any other plays, Atwal chose to concede the first Duel.
Duel 2
Atwal chose to go first again, and opened with Dimension Shifter, K9-17 Izuna, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Stake Your Soul!, and Vanquish Soul Razen. He started by Normal Summoning Vanquish Soul Razen and searching for Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue, then used Razen to Link Summon Rock of the Vanquisher and add Razen back to his hand. Next, he Special Summoned Hollie Sue and activated its effect to Special Summon Vanquish Soul Jiaolong from the Deck. He activated the effect of Dimension Shifter, discarding it, then activated Jiaolong’s effect to search for Vanquish Soul, Start! He activated Start, searching for Vanquish Soul Heavy Borger, then in the End Phase, used the effect of Start to Set Vanquish Soul Snow Devil from his Deck to his backrow.
During Lee’s Draw Phase, Atwal activated the effect of Jiaolong, searching for Vanquish Soul Caesar Valius. However, Lee wasn’t able to make plays without access to his Graveyard, and so he chose to concede the second Duel. Time for the all-important game 3!
Duel 3
Atwal’s opening hand contained Artifact Lancea, Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay, Vanquish Soul Dr. Mad Love, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, and Pot of Extravagance.
Lee chose to go first! He started by activating the effect of K9-66a Jokul, Special Summoning it and Crystron Sulfador from his hand. Lee resolved Sulfador’s effect, sending Crystron Cluster and Crystron Tristaros to the Graveyard, as Atwal activated the effect of Artifact Lancea, preventing both players from banishing cards for the rest of the turn! Next, Lee activated the effect of Jokul, searching for K9-17 Izuna. He used Jokul and Sulfador to Xyz Summon K9-17 “Ripper”, then activated Ripper’s effect to search for another copy of K9-66a Jokul and Set K9-X Forced Release to his backrow. He Special Summoned K9-17 Izuna from his hand and sent K9-ØØ Lupis to the Graveyard, Special Summoned the Lupis, then used Izuna and Lupis to Xyz Summon Infinitrack River Stormer. When Atwal attempted to negate River Stormer’s effect with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Lee Chained the effect of Ripper! This allowed River Stormer to resolve and add Scrap Recycler to his hand, which he then Normal Summoned and sent Crystron Smiger to the Graveyard. He used Recycler to Link Summon Clockwork Knight, and here, Atwal activated the effect of Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay! He Special Summoned it, but unfortunately drew two copies of Mulcharmy Purulia, so he returned one back to the Deck.
Next, Lee activated Clockwork Knight’s effect, sending River Stormer to the Graveyard to Special Summon back Tristaros. He then activated K9-66b Lantern’s effect, Special Summoning it and Izuna to the field, then used Lantern’s effect to search for “A Case for K9”. He activated Case, searching for Izuna, then used Tristaros and Lantern to Synchro Summon Crystron Eleskeletus! Lee added Cluster back to his hand, then used Clockwork and Izuna to Link Summon S:P Little Knight. He activated Sulfador’s effect, destroying Eleskeletus to Special Summon it back, then Set two cards to his backrow and ended his turn.
Atwal drew Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue for turn! He started off by activating Pot of Extravagance, but Lee responded with Solemn Judgment! On resolution, Lee activated Forced Release, destroying Phantazmay and Special Summoning K9-X “Werewolf” by using Ripper as material. Atwal then Normal Summoned Vanquish Soul Dr. Mad Love, and Lee Chained the effect of Werewolf, looking at Atwal’s hand and banishing Hollie Sue until the End Phase. Atwal added Vanquish Soul, Start! to his hand, but here, Lee activated Crystron Cluster, destroying Atwal’s Mad Love. Atwal ended his turn with nothing on his side of the field.
During Lee’s Standby Phase, Atwal activated the effect of Mulcharmy Purulia! However, this allowed Lee to Special Summon K9-ØØ Lupis from his Graveyard. Lee then switched all of his monsters to Attack Position and entered the Battle Phase, attacking directly with all of his monsters and reducing Atwal’s Life Points to zero.
With that, Lee maintains his undefeated record here at YCS Vancouver!
