Genesys Invitational Round 1 Feature Match: Hanko Chow vs. William Jones

The Genesys Invitation has begun! Hanko Chow, from Barrie, Ontario, was a Top 4 Duelist at the YCS Anaheim Genesys Invitational. With the recent points update, he’s switched from Generaiders to Monarchs! His opponent is William Jones, a Kentucky Duelist playing Radiant Typhoon with the new Dogmatika cards! This Invitational is single elimination – only one Duelist can advance from here!

Duel 1

Chow began with Tessera the Primal Squire, Erebus the Underworld Monarch, Domain of the True Monarchs, The Monarchs Revolt, and Edea the Heavenly Squire.

Jones won the roll and played first, playing Radiant Typhoon Chant to put Mystical Space Typhoon in his hand. He then played another Chant to add Radiant Typhoon Eldam to his hand. He moved to the Main Phase and Special Summoned Eldam, which put Radiant Typhoon Krosea in his hand. He Special Summoned Radiant Typhoon Swen, which put Radiant Typhoon Vision in his hand. He played Vision, drawing two cards and discarding another Swen. He Special Summoned Krosea from his hand, which put Mystical Space Typhoon and Radiant Typhoon Mandate in his hand. He stacked Swen and Eldam for Totem Bird, then Set five back row cards.

William Jones

Chow drew The Monarchs Stormforth. He began by playing Normal Summoning Edea, and Jones responded to Edea’s effect with Vision. He then Chained Mystical Space Typhoon targeting his Vision, and finally Chained Mandate to negate Edea! Vision let him draw and discard Radiant Typhoon Varuroon, the Vibrant Vortex. Chow continued, Special Summoning Tessera by revealing Stormforth. He activated Tessera’s effect, and Jones Chained Mystical Space Typhoon targeting his own Mandate. He was hoping to activate Mandate here, but Chow Chained Stormforth. Jones Chained to that with Totem Bird to negate it. He then Chained The Fallen & The Virtuous, destroying Tessera and sending Titaniklad the Ash Dragon to the Graveyard.

In a new Chain, Mandate was Set, Varuroon hit the field, and Tessera brought Eidos the Underworld Squire to the field. Chow activated Eidos’s effect, and it was negated by Varuroon. Chow didn’t see a way to continue from here and conceded the first Duel.

Duel 2

Chow played first this time, with a hand of Tessera the Primal Squire, Ehther the Heavenly Monarch, Tenacity of the Monarchs, Eidos the Underworld Squire, and Domain of the True Monarchs. He Special Summoned Tessera by revealing Tenacity. He played Tenacity by revealing Ehther, adding The Monarchs Revolt to his hand. He played Revolt, discarding Eidos the Underworld Squire to reveal an Erebus and two copies of Eidos the Underworld Monarch, putting an Eidos in hand and the rest in the Graveyard. He used Erebus’s Graveyard effect, discarding Domain to return Erebus to his hand. He used Tessera’s effect to Tribute Summon Eidos the Underworld Monarch. That let him Special Summon the other Eidos the Underworld Monarch from his Graveyard, and Tessera let him Special Summon Edea the Heavenly Squire from his Deck. The first Eidos put Strike of the Monarchs in his hand.

Edea’s effect brought Garum the Storm Vassal to the field. He Tributed Garum and Eidos for Erebus. Garum put Mithra the Thunder Vassal in his hand, and Erebus sent The Prime Monarch and The Monarchs Masterplan to the Graveyard to shuffle a random card from Jones’s hand into the Deck. He Special Summoned Mithra by giving Jones a Vassal Token. He used Eidos to make that Token FIRE. Then he banished Masterplan to Special Summon The Prime Monarch. Masterplan targeted the Vassal Token, now a FIRE monster, to put Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch in his hand. He Tribute Summoned it by Tributing Mithra, and Thestalos made Jones discard Eldam and take 300 damage. He Tributed The Prime Monarch and Edea for Ehther. He returned Masterplan to his hand, then sent Pantheism of the Monarchs and Masterplan from his Deck to the Graveyard to Special Summon another Ehther. He banished Pantheism from his Graveyard to reveal another Pantheism and two copies of Stormforth, getting Stormforth in his hand. He Set Stormforth and Strike. In the End Phase, the second Eather went back to the hand.

In Jones’s Draw Phase, Chow Special Summoned The Prime Monarch by banishing Masterplan. Masterplan targeted the FIRE Token once more, to put a new Thestalos in Chow’s hand. He Tribute Summoned it over The Prime Monarch, discarding another Eldam from Jones! Still in the Draw Phase, Jones played Radiant Typhoon Manifestation to add Mystical Space Typhoon to his hand. He played it, and Chow flipped the targeted Stormforth. Jones then Special Summoned Krusea. He tried using its effect, but Chow flipped Strike to negate it – Jones conceded!

Duel 3

Chow had a hand of Edea, Erebus, Evenly Matched, Masterplan, Revolt.

In the Draw Phase, Jones activated Radiant Typhoon Vision to draw two cards and discard another Vision. He Normal Summoned Dogmatika Ecclesia, the Virtuous, adding The Fallen & The Virtuous to his hand. He Set three back row cards, and activated Mirage of Nightmare!

Chow drew another Erebus. In the Standby Phase, Jones drew three cards with Mirage of Nightmare! Chow moved directly to his Battle Phase, and activated Evenly Matched – Jones banished everything except one of his face-down cards.

Chow went to Main Phase 2, playing Revolt by discarding Erebus. He revealed two copies of Eidos the Underworld Monarch and a Tessera, getting Tessera in hand and the others in his Graveyard. Jones then used D.D. Crow to banish Erebus. Chow Special Summoned Tessera by revealing Masterplan. Jones flipped The Fallen & The Virtuous, sending The Dragon that Devours the Dogma to the Graveyard to destroy Tessera. Jones Special Summoned Radiant Typhoon Fonix, the Great Flame, and Tessera’s effect let Chow Special Summon Eidos the Underworld Squire from his Deck. Chow banished Revolt from the Graveyard to Special Summon Edea, and Edea Special Summoned a new Tessera. He activated Tessera’s effect, using it and Eidos to Tribute Summon Erebus. He Special Summoned Eidos the Underworld Monarch from his Graveyard, and Erebus sent Pantheism and The Prime Monarch to the Graveyard, shuffling Fonix back into the Deck. Eidos the Underworld Monarch put a new Erebus in Chow’s hand.

He used Eidos to Tribute Summon the new Erebus, sending Pantheism and Revolt to the Graveyard, returning The Dragon that Devours the Dogma from the Graveyard to the Extra Deck. He banished Pantheism from his Graveyard to add a Tenacity to his hand. He returned Erebus from the Graveyard to his hand by discarding Masterplan. He played Tenacity to put Domain in his hand. He played Domain, then Special Summoned The Prime Monarch by banishing Revolt. He used Domain to change Erebus’s Level, to let him Tribute Summon Erebus yet again, sending Pantheism and Revolt to the Graveyard and shuffle one of Jones’s in-hand cards into the Deck. Jones was left with just one card in hand at the end of this, despite drawing with Mirage of Nightmare!

Jones drew for his turn. He Set one card in his back row. In the End Phase, Chow Special Summoned Prime by banishing Masterplan.

Chow drew Cosmic Cyclone. He banished Pantheism from the Graveyard, getting Stormforth in the hand. He played Cosmic Cyclone on Jones’s lone back row card, and Jones Chained it – Dogmatika Punishment, targeting Eidos. He sent Elder Entity N’tss to the Graveyard to destroy Eidos, and N’tss destroyed an Erebus. Chow returned Erebus to his hand by discarding Revolt. He Tributed Prime for Erebus, and Eidos returned to the field. He moved to the Battle Phase to attack and end the Match!
