Top 32 Feature Match: Abdur Rahim Dominguez vs. Prabhdeep Atwal

We’re finally here! We’ve made it to the Top 32 here at YCS Vancouver after 10 rounds of Swiss. The Duelists will now be competing in single elimination rounds, and only one Duelist will be left standing at the end, being declared the winner of YCS Vancouver! For our first Top 32 Feature Match, we have two Duelists using the new K9 cards from Justice Hunters; Prabhdeep Atwal, playing in his hometown Vancouver, is piloting a variation of the Vanquish Soul K9 strategy, with some interesting tech cards that have served him well throughout the weekend. Meanwhile, Abdur Rahim Dominguez is using the Crystron K9 Deck, a strategy that some players may have overlooked, but has taken up several spots in the Top 32 cut. Which of these Duelists will be moving on to the Top 16? Let’s find out! It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Atwal opened with Mulcharmy Fuwalos, Vanquish Soul Jiaolong, Reinforcement of the Army, Pot of Extravagance, and Stake Your Soul!

Dominguez won the die roll and chose to go first! He started by activating Chaotic Elements, searching for K9-66a Jokul. He then Special Summoned K9-66a Jokul and Crystron Sulfador, using Sulfador’s effect to send Crystron Sulfefnir and Crystron Thystvern from the Deck to the Graveyard. Here, Atwal activated the effect of Mulcharmy Fuwalos! Dominguez activated Jokul’s effect, searching for K9-17 Izuna, then used Sulfador and Jokul to Xyz Summon K9-17 “Ripper”. Dominguez banished Thystvern to search for Crystron Smiger, then activated Ripper’s effect to search for “A Case for K9” and Set K9-X Forced Release to his backrow. He activated Case, searching for another Izuna, then Special Summoned Izuna from hand and sent K9-ØØ Lupis to the Graveyard. He Special Summoned Lupis from the Graveyard, then discarded Smiger to Special Summon Crystron Sulfefnir from hand and destroyed “A Case for K9”. He used Sulfefnir, Izuna, and Lupis to Xyz Summon Number 67: Pair-a-Dice Smasher! Before he could activate its effect, Atwal activated the effect of Bystial Magnamhut, Special Summoning it by banishing Dominguez’s Jokul in the Graveyard; Atwal was trying to get his opponent to activate the effect of Ripper to negate Magnamhut, but Dominguez didn’t respond! To follow up, Atwal activated the effect of Nibiru, the Primal Being, but Dominguez Chained the effect of Ripper, negating its effect. Dominguez was able to resolve the effect of Pair-a-Dice Smasher, and Atwal rolled a higher number, so he won’t be able to activate monster effects or attack until the end of his next turn.

Next, Dominguez banished Smiger from the Graveyard to search for Crystron Inclusion, then activated Inclusion to search for Crystron Cluster. He activated Lantern’s effect, Special Summoning both it and Izuna, then used the two to Xyz Summon Infinitrack River Stormer and search for Scrap Recycler. He Normal Summoned the Recycler and sent Crystron Tristaros to the Graveyard, used Recycler to Link Summon Clockwork Knight, then used Knight’s effect to send River Stormer to the Graveyard and Special Summon back Tristaros. He activated Sulfador’s effect in the Graveyard, destroying Inclusion to Special Summon it back, then used Tristaros and Sulfador to Synchro Summon Crystron Eleskeletus! Several summons later, Dominguez Synchro Summoned F.A. Dawn Dragster, then Xyz Summoned Cyber Dragon Infinity and attached Atwal’s Magnamhut to it as Xyz Material. Finally, Dominguez Set three cards to his backrow and ended his turn.

Atwal knew he would not be able to play through his opponent’s board, and chose to concede the first Duel immediately, so that Dominguez would not know what Deck he was playing for game two!

Duel 2

Atwal chose to go first! His opening hand contained Reinforcement of the Army, Droll & Lock Bird, K9-ØØ Lupis, Artifact Lancea, and Pot of Extravagance. He began by activating Pot of Extravagance, banishing 6 cards from his Extra Deck to draw Dimension Shifter and Vanquish Soul Heavy Borger. Next, he activated Reinforcement of the Army, searching for Vanquish Soul Razen, then Normal Summoned Razen and searched for Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue. He used Razen to Link Summon Rock of the Vanquisher, but when he attempted to activate its effect to add a Vanquish Soul from his Graveyard back to hand, Dominguez Chained the effect of Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion! After the Chain resolved, Atwal Special Summoned Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue from hand, then Special Summoned Vanquish Soul Heavy Borger from hand by returning Hollie Sue to hand, then ended his turn.

During Dominguez’s Draw Phase, Atwal activated the effect of Borger to draw a copy of K9-17 Izuna! Dominguez started his turn by Normal Summoning Crystron Smiger. In response, Atwal activated Rock’s effect to add Vanquish Soul Razen back to hand. Atwal then Special Summoned Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue from hand, but when he activated its effect to Special Summon a Vanquish Soul monster from his Deck, it was met with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Atwal then Special Summoned Lupis from hand, and used Lupis’ effect to Xyz Summon N.As.H. Knight on the opponent’s turn. He then activated N.As.H. Knight’s effect to attach Dominguez’s Smiger to it as Xyz Material.

Dominguez activated the effect of K9-66a Jokul in hand, Special Summoning it and K9-66b Lantern, then activated Jokul’s effect to search for K9-17 Izuna. On resolution, Atwal activated the effect of Droll & Lock Bird! Dominguez used Lantern and Jokul to Xyz Summon Vallon, the Super Psy Skyblaster, and activated its effect to turn Heavy Borger into face-down Defense Position. He entered the Battle Phase and attacked Rock of the Vanquisher with Vallon, and in Main Phase 2, used Vallon to Xyz Summon Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS – Sky Thunder! He activated Zeus’ effect to send all other cards on the field to the Graveyard, and on resolution, Atwal activated the effect of Artifact Lancea. Dominguez Special Summoned K9-17 Izuna and sent K9-ØØ Lupis to the Graveyard, Special Summoned back Lupis from the Graveyard, then used Izuna and Lupis to Xyz Summon Chronomaly Vimana, and ended his turn.

Atwal drew another copy of Artifact Lancea for turn! He started by Normal Summoning Vanquish Soul Razen, but when he activated its effect,  Dominguez negated it with the effect of Vimana. Atwal used Razen to Link Summon Rock of the Vanquisher, then activated Rock’s effect to add Razen back to hand, and ended his turn.

Dominguez began his turn by banishing Crystron Smiger from the Graveyard to search for Crystron Inclusion. In response, Atwal activated the effect of Rock of the Vanquisher, but Dominguez Chained Forbidden Droplet to negate it! Dominguez then activated Crystron Inclusion, searching for Crystron Sulfador, then destroyed Inclusion to Special Summon Sulfador and send Thystvern and Cluster to the Graveyard. On resolution, Atwal activated the effect of Artifact Lancea

Dominguez switched Vimana and Zeus to Attack Position. Here, Atwal Special Summoned K9-17 Izuna from hand and K9-ØØ Lupis from the Graveyard, then activated Lupis’ effect, using Izuna and Lupis to Xyz Summon K9-17 “Ripper”. Dominguez proceeded to the Battle Phase, attacking Ripper with Zeus, Rock with Sulfador, and then directly with Vimana, leaving Atwal with only 600 Life Points remaining! In Main Phase 2, Dominguez Special Summoned Lupis from the Graveyard, used Lupis and Sulfador to Xyz Summon Infinitrack River Stormer, then ended his turn.

Atwal drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring for turn! He began by Normal Summoning Vanquish Soul Razen and searching for Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue, then activated Razen’s other effect to destroy the River Stormer in its column. However, this allowed Dominguez to attach Crystron Sulfefnir from his Deck to his Zeus! At this point, Atwal was unable to make any more plays; he had banished some key cards from his Extra Deck with Pot of Extravagance, so he wasn’t able to make Rock of the Vanquisher. Atwal conceded the match.

WIth the victory, Dominguez is moving on to the Top 16 here at YCS Vancouver!
