YCS Pittsburgh: General Tech Update

There are many different decks performing well at the top tables here at YCS Pittsburgh, using strategies such as Yummy, K9, Dracotail, and Mitsurugi. Each Duelist has selected tech cards to incorporate into their Decks, hoping to give themselves an edge against the competition. Here are some of the tech cards that have been seeing competitive success this weekend!

Double Cyclone

Double Cyclone is a very simple Quick-Play Spell Card; it targets one Spell/Trap that you control and one that your opponent controls, and destroys them both. This card has emerged as a very popular Side Deck option that players are choosing to use against Dracotail, particularly in Decks using the Mitsurugi cards. Dracotail Flame is one of the most powerful disruptions in the Dracotail Deck, able to negate the effect of a face-up Spell on the field. Against Mitsurugi, Dracotail players will often hold Flame to use against Mitsurugi Ritual, attempting to cut off access to powerful monsters like Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi and Futsu no Mitama no Mitsurugi. However, Double Cyclone is a card that helps to ensure that Mitsurugi Ritual can resolve! It destroys Mitsurugi Ritual so that it is no longer face-up on the field, and therefore cannot be negated by Flame. Furthermore, since Flame is no longer able to negate Mitsurugi Ritual, the Dracotail player will also not be able to return a “Dracotail” card to the bottom of the Deck, nor draw a card! Dracotail has been an extremely popular Deck choice this weekend, bolstered by cards like The Fallen & The Virtuous, so having tech options ready for the Dracotail matchup has been extremely important!

Mulcharmy Meowls

Mulcharmy Meowls is an interesting tech choice that some Duelists are opting to run in the Main Deck! Historically, Meowls has been relegated to the Side Deck; it was particularly useful in the Maliss matchup, allowing you to draw a card whenever your opponent Special Summoned back one of their Maliss monsters, but it wasn’t particularly strong against Decks like Ryzeal. However, this format, players wanting to run more cards that will allow them to draw into key engine pieces, and Meowls is a card that can be used against a lot of the Decks in the current format. Against Mitsurugi, Futsu no Mitama no Mitsurugi, Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi, and Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi can all be Special Summoned out of the Graveyard or Banishment when Tributed; against Yummy, both Yummyusment☆Mignon and Lollipo☆Yummy Way are key combo pieces that Special Summon monsters from the Graveyard; and against Dracotail, you’re able to get value out of Meowls when your opponent Special Summons back a monster such as Dracotail Arthalion, Dracotail Gulamel, or Fallen of Albaz! In a format where players want to have access to as many engine pieces as possible, cards like Mulcharmy Meowls not only attempt to dissuade your opponent from establishing a full board, but also allow you to draw into the key combo pieces you need!

Super Polymerization

Super Polymerization has the potential to be one of the most powerful disruptions in the format! It can be a costly card, requiring you to discard a card to activate it, as well as occupying multiple Extra Deck spots for cards such as Mudragon of the Swamp and Garura, Wings of Resonant Life. However, in the current format, it’s certainly a tech option worth considering if you can have the room in your Extra Deck, as it’s an effective way to both push through your opponent’s establish board, as well as stop them from setting up. In the Dracotail matchup, Secreterion Dragon can be an incredibly difficult card to deal with, since while you control it, your opponent cannot activate the effects of Special Summoned Dragon or Spellcaster monsters. With Super Polymerization, you can use your opponent’s Dracotail Arthalion and Dracotail Gulamel to make Secreterion Dragon, making it difficult for them to mount a comeback! Against Mitsurugi, you can fuse away Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi and Futsu no Mitama no Mitsurugi to make Garura; this forces your opponent to use another card, such as Mitsurugi Prayers, to bring their Mitsurugi monsters back to the field, and prevents them from continuously generating card advantage with Futsu and Murakumo. Finally, the card can be especially devastating against Yummy. While your opponent is setting up, you can fuse away two of your opponent’s Yummy monsters to make Garura; since your opponent can’t respond to the activation of Super Polymerization, they won’t be able to activate the effects of their Yummy Synchro monsters. And against an established board, you can fuse away Herald of the Arc Light and another Yummy monster to make Mudragon of the Swamp! This is particularly devastating, since Mudragon can prevent your opponent from targeting your monsters with card effects, limiting their ability to disrupt you with cards like Cooky☆Yummy Way and Yummy☆Surprise
