Tech Update: New Support in Duelist’s Advance

The North America WCQ is the first chance event where Duelists are able to incorporate the brand new cards from Duelist’s Advance into their Decks. The brand new core set carries a ton of powerful support for existing archetypes, and many of these strategies have performed well this weekend. Let’s see how these new cards help to support their respective strategies!

Lunalight

Lunalights are a Fusion-based strategy that aims to Fusion Summon powerful boss monsters. The monsters are all Beast-Warriors, which means that they can be easily accessed from the Deck with cards like Fire Formation – Tenki. The strategy received several new support cards that help to significantly improve the Deck’s consistency, as well as build some incredibly powerful end boards! Lunalight Gold Leo is an amazing card for the Deck, allowing you to search for a Lunalight monster from your Deck when it is summoned, but then requiring you to discard a card. This isn’t too problematic, however, as Lunalights actually want to get many cards, such as Lunalight Yellow Martin, Lunalight Serenade Dance, or Luna Light Perfume into the Graveyard so that you can use their effects. Its second effect activates when a Lunalight monster is sent to your Graveyard, and allows you to add one of them back to your hand. This helps the Deck to maintain resources, as well as find an alternative way to get key cards to hand if your opponent is using Droll & Lock Bird

Another strong card at the disposal of Lunalights is Lunalight Liger Dancer. This is the ultimate boss monster for the strategy, and requires a hefty cost of Lunalight Leo Dancer and three other Lunalight monsters in order to Fusion Summon it. However, this card is completely unaffected by all other card effects, except for the effects of Lunalight cards; this means that if your opponent isn’t playing a tech card like Lava Golem and doesn’t have a way to Special Summon a huge monster, they might not be able to deal with Liger Dancer at all. Even then, Liger Dancer lets you send a Lunalight monster from your Extra Deck to destroy all Special Summoned monsters your opponent controls, which means that you can get rid of a potentially threatening monster and ensure that your Liger Dancer is able to stay on the board for as long as possible. These two new tools, as well as the rest of the support they received, has helped Lunalights establish a huge presence here this weekend.

Vanquish Soul

The Vanquish Soul monsters are an extremely interesting theme with a very unique playstyle! It consists of EARTH, FIRE, and DARK monsters that all have unique Types, and they have effects that can be activated by revealing specific Attribute combinations of monsters in your hand. The newest Vanquish Soul monster from Duelist’s Advance is Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue. Hollie Sue can be Special Summoned during either player’s Main Phase by revealing a Vanquish Soul monster from your hand, and then can either take control of 1 monster your opponent controls or Special Summon another Vanquish Soul monster from your Deck. Taking control of an opponent’s monster can be very powerful, but Special Summoning Vanquish Soul Razen out of the Deck can allow you to search a card, as well as destroy cards in Razen’s column!

One other key new card for the Vanquish Soul deck is Vanquish Soul, Start! This card lets you target a Vanquish Soul monster that you control and add a Vanquish Soul monster with a different Attribute from your Deck; this helps make Vanquish Soul Dr. Mad Love a more effective way to start off your Vanquish Soul combos. It also allows you to reveal a Vanquish Soul monster in your hand to prevent your Vanquish Soul monsters from being destroyed. Finally, during the End Phase, if you control 2 or more Vanquish Soul monsters, it allows you to Set a Vanquish Soul Trap Card from your Deck; players are choosing to run Vanquish Soul Snow Devil, which can clear all monsters on the opponent’s side of the Field. These are just two of the new support cards that Vanquish Soul receives in Duelist’s Advance, and we’ve many players qualify for Day 2 with the Deck.

Morganite

Believe it or not, the Morganite theme received a couple of amazing new support cards in Duelist’s Advance, as well! We now have a third new Morganite Spell Card, Guilt-Gripping Morganite. This card, just like the other two Morganite Spells, prevents you from activating monster effects in the hand. However, it allows you to do two very powerful things; it allows you to Normal Summon Level 5 or higher monsters without Tributing, and you do not need to pay Life Points to activate Spell or Trap Cards. We’ve seen players choose to run powerful monsters, such as Archlord Kristya and Majesty’s Fiend, which are much easier to bring out when you don’t need to Tribute monsters. It also allows powerful Trap Cards, such as Solemn Judgment and Iron Thunder, to be activated without having to worry about how many Life Points you have left!

The other new support card for the theme is Morgana the Witch of Eyes. This Level 4 Spellcaster allows you to search for any of the Morganite Spell Cards when it is Normal or Special Summoned, allowing you to search for the ideal one based on the cards in your hand. It also helps to ensure that you have time to build up resources with the Morganite cards, as it can negate an opponent’s monster’s attack by banishing a Morganite Spell Card from your Graveyard, as well as potentially reduce the Attack Points of all of your opponent’s face-up monsters to 0. All of these effects help will help you stay in the game, and hopefully allow you to draw into other powerful cards!

These are just a few of the themes that received new support in Duelist’s Advance. Check out the new cards from the latest set and see if your favourite Deck has any neat new tools!
