Round 10 Feature Match: Eion VanTull vs. Carlos Sagastume

Eion VanTull from Washington, D.C. and Carlos Sagastume from Houston, Texas are both 6-1-2 in the tournament, and made it into Day 2 of YCS Houston with 20 points. With a pair of victories in today’s Swiss Rounds, they’ll have a shot at making it into the Top 32 cut – but now they’re facing off against one another in this Round 10 Feature Match! VanTull is using a Fiendsmith Unchained Yubel Deck, and Sagastume is running a Bystial Primite Blue-Eyes Deck. Only one of them can win. It’s time to Duel!

 

Duel One

 

VanTull opened up Duel 1 with Spirit of Yubel, Fabled Lurrie, Nightmare Throne, and 2 copies of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring.

 

He Normal Summoned the Lurrie and sent it to the Graveyard to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem. He Tributed the Requiem to Special Summon Lacrima the Crimson Tears from his Deck and used Lacrima’s effect to send Fiendsmith Engraver from his Deck to his Graveyard. He used the effect of the Requiem in his Graveyard to equip it to his Lacrima and then sent Lacrima and Requiem to the Graveyard to Special Summon Necroquip Princess. Next, he activated Nightmare Throne and destroyed Spirit of Yubel from his Deck. He used the effect of Spirit of Yubel to Special Summon Yubel from his Deck. Next, he sent Yubel and Necroquip Princess to the Graveyard to Link Summon Unchained Soul of Yama and activated Yama’s effect. Sagastume Chained the effect of his Magnamhut to Summon it by banishing Engraver from VanTull’s Graveyard. VanTull added Unchained Soul of Sharvara to his hand with Yama’s effect, and then Sagastume activated the Magnamhut’s on-field effect in a new Chain; but VanTull negated its effect with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. VanTull ended his turn with no further play.

 

Sagastume Normal Summoned Sage with Eyes of Blue and activated its effect. VanTull Chained the effect of the Lacrima in his Graveyard to try to Special Summon Requiem, but VanTull Chained Called by the Grave to banish the Lacrima and negate its effect. Sagastume resolved the effect of his Sage and added Effect Veiler from his Deck to his hand. Next Sagastume activated the effect of the Maiden of White in his hand by sending it to the Graveyard. He placed True Light from his hand into his Spell & Trap Zone and then used its effect to Set Wishes for Eyes of Blue from his Deck to his back row. He activated Wishes by discarding Effect Veiler from his hand, and VanTull Chained the effect of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate it. Next, Sagastume activated Mausoleum of White and used its effect by targeting Magnamhut. He sent a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Deck to his Graveyard to increase Magnamhut’s ATK by 800. He sent his Sage to the Graveyard to Link Summon Spirit with Eyes of Blue and then Tributed the Spirit to Summon Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his Graveyard. Next, he used the effect of the Maiden in his Graveyard to Special Summon it. He banished Wishes from his Graveyard to use its effect and equip his Blue-Eyes with Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon from his Extra Deck. Next, he Tuned his Maiden with his Blue-Eyes White Dragon to Synchro Summon Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon. He switched Magnamhut into Attack Position and then attacked Yama with Magnamhut. VanTull activated the effect of Spirit of Yubel in his hand to Special Summon it in Attack Position and then used Spirit of Yubel’s on-field effect to add Nightmare Pain from his Deck to his hand. Magnamhut destroyed Yama in battle, and VanTull lost 1300 Life Points.

 

VanTull drew Called by the Grave and then activated Nightmare Pain. He used its effect to destroy Spirit of Yubel and add Gruesome Grave Squirmer from his Deck to his hand. He activated the effect of Yama by banishing it from his Graveyard as Chain Link 1 and activated the effect of Spirit of Yubel as Chain Link 2. Sagastume activated his Spirit Dragon’s effect as Chain Link 3 to try to negate the effect of Spirit of Yubel, and then Chained the other effect of his Spirit Dragon by Tributing it, attempting to Special Summon a monster from his Extra Deck; but VanTull Chained Called by the Grave to banish the Spirit Dragon from the Graveyard and negate its effects as Chain Link 5! The effects of Spirit of Yubel and Yama both resolved, and he Special Summoned Yubel and Fiendsmith’s Requiem. He Tributed his Requiem to activate its effect, and Sagastume Chained True Light to Special Summon Blue-Eyes from his Graveyard. VanTull Special Summoned Engraver with his Requiem’s effect and then Sagastume Special Summoned Maiden of White from his Graveyard with its effect in a new Chain. Next, VanTull Special Summoned Gruesome Grave Squirmer from his hand and destroyed his Yubel. He activated Yubel’s effect to Special Summon Yubel – Terror Incarnate from his Deck and then activated Requiem’s effect to equip it to his Engraver. He used Engraver’s effect to send Requiem and Magnamhut to the Graveyard and then sent Gruesome Grave Squirmer and Engraver to the Graveyard to Link Summon another Yama. He Special Summoned Engraver from his Graveyard by returning Requiem from his Graveyard to his Extra Deck and then sent Engraver and Yama to the Graveyard to Link Summon Muckraker From the Underworld. Next, he banished Gruesome Grave Squirmer from his Graveyard to Special Summon Spirit of Yubel from his Graveyard in Attack Position. He used its effect to add Nightmare Pain from his Deck to his hand and then Special Summoned Sharvara from his hand by destroying his Spirit of Yubel. He used the effect of Spirit of Yubel to Special Summon Yubel in Attack Position. He used Muckraker’s effect next and Special Summoned Spirit of Yubel from his Graveyard, discarding Nightmare Pain from his hand to do so. He attacked the Defense Position Blue-Eyes White Dragon with Yubel, Spirit of Yubel, and Yubel – Terror Incarnate, inflicting 2500 points of damage to Sagastume’s Life Points each time thanks to Nightmare Pain. Sagastume dropped down to 500 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, VanTull sent his Terror Incarnate and Yubel to the Graveyard to Link Summon Moon of the Close Heaven, and then sent Moon of the Closed Heaven and Spirit of Yubel to the Graveyard to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence. He used Sequence’s effect by returning Moon, Engraver, and Lurrie from his Graveyard to his Deck, and Special Summoned Fiendsmith’s Desirae. He sent Sequence and Sharvara to the Graveyard next to Link Summon Unchained Soul of Rage. He used Sharvara’s effect to Set Escape of the Unchained from his Deck to his field. He used the effect of the Sequence in his Graveyard to equip it to Desirae and then returned Yubel and Yubel – Terror Incarnate from his Graveyard to his Deck to Special Summon Phantom of Yubel.

Duel Two

 

Sagastume started off Duel 2. In the Draw Phase, VanTull activated the effect of Mulcharmy Purulia. Sagastume Set 3 cards to his back row and passed his turn.

 

 

VanTull drew Dark Beckoning Beast and added it to his hand of Harpie’s Feather Duster, Fiendsmith Engraver, Spirit of Yubel, and Yubel. He activated the Feather Duster to destroy Sagastume’s face-down Infinite Impermanence, Dominus Purge, and Majesty of the White Dragons. Next, Van Tull Normal Summoned Dark Beckoning Beast and activated its effect, but lost out to Sagastume’s Effect Veiler. VanTull activated the effect of Fiendsmith Engraver in his hand next, and added Fiendsmith’s Tract from his Deck to his hand. He activated the Tract to add Fabled Lurrie from his Deck to his hand and discard it. He activated Lurrie’s effect to Special Summon it and then sent Lurrie to the Graveyard to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem. He Tributed Requiem to Special Summon Lacrima the Crimson Tears from his Deck. He used Requiem’s effect to equip it to his Lacrima and then sent Lacrima and Requiem to the Graveyard to Special Summon Necroquip Princess. He sent Necroquip and Dark Beckoning Beast to the Graveyard to Link Summon Yama and used Yama’s effect to add Sharvara from his Deck to his hand. He returned a Yubel from his hand and a Dark Beckoning Beast from his Graveyard back to his Deck to Special Summon Phantom of Yubel from his Extra Deck in Attack Position. Next, he Special Summoned Engraver from his Graveyard by returning Lurrie from his Graveyard to his Deck. He sent Yama and Engraver to the Graveyard to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence and then used the effect of Sequence. He returned Engraver and Requiem from his Graveyard to his Deck to Special Summon Aerial Eater. He used Aerial Eater’s effect to send Gruesome Grave Squirmer from his deck to his Graveyard. He banished the Squirmer to Special Summon Spirit of Yubel from his hand. He activated the Spirit’s on-field effect to Set Nightmare Pain from his deck to his field and then flipped it. He used its effect to destroy Spirit of Yubel and add Samsara D Lotus from his Deck to his hand. He activated the effects of Spirit of Yubel and the Yama in his Graveyard. Yama’s effect Special Summoned Spirit and then Spirit’s effect Special Summoned Yubel from his Deck. He Special Summoned Sharvara from his hand by destroying Yubel and then used Yubel’s effect to Special Summon Yubel – Terror Incarnate from his Deck. Next, he sent his Terror Incarnate and Aerial Eater to the Graveyard to Link Summon another Yama and then Special Summoned Aerial Eater back from the Graveyard with its effect by banishing Necroquip Princess and Yubel from his Graveyard. He sent Spirit of Yubel and Sequence to the Graveyard to Link Summon Muckraker From the Underworld and then used Muckraker’s effect to Special Summon Lacrima and discard Lotus. Direct attacks from Yama, Sharvara, Aerial Eater, Lacrima, and Muckraker wiped out all 8000 of Sagastume’s Life Points!
